Many people have a fear around selling and feel they don’t have sales confidence. Your business relies on sales and it can seem daunting at first to put yourself out there. In this article I’m going to show you how to build sales confidence.
You may have to take proactive action in reaching out to potential clients and offering your services.
You may have to become more visible both online and offline.
Selling may bring other fears to the surface; fear of failure, fear of success, fear of rejection.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Selling is a skill, and one I believe anyone can learn. With practice and consistency, you can absolutely increase your sales confidence.
So where do you begin? Here’s my 5 simple steps on how to build self confidence:
1. Visualisation
“How to build sales confidence with visualisation?” you might think at first. But… don’t underestimate it – Visualisation is a powerful tool for increasing your confidence around sales and also in other areas of your life. The technique involves imagining a successful outcome to a situation before it has happened.
You could see it as a mental rehearsal to prep and prepare your brain for success. Give yourself a moment, close your eyes and begin by breathing deeply. Bring an image to mind of the sales success you desire. Imagine how it would feel to secure that new 1:1 client you’ve been working towards. Or perhaps you imagine landing a new speaking gig. Fill the image with as much detail as possible and feel the emotions of securing the sale. Practice your visualisation regularly to prepare for your future success.
2. Turn Fear Into Excitement
Fear and excitement are forms of energy which actually feel quite similar in your body. If you can shift the energy from fear to excitement, even before going into the sales call, you will give off a positive, confident impression rather than one of needy desperation. Rather than letting fear run the show, try tapping into feelings of positivity, gratitude and excitement.

3. Focus on Your ‘Why’
When the going gets tough, having clarity around your ‘why’ can really help. What will the extra income allow you to create in your life? Will it allow you to have more freedom? Will it give you more options? Write down your personal ‘why’ in as much detail as you can and refer back to it when you are feeling overwhelmed or apprehensive.
4. Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway
Another way to build sales confidence is by pushing yourself to take action, even when you’re scared to do so. By proving to yourself that you are capable of selling, you will change the story you have in your head that selling is too scary, you’re too out of your depth etc. As you take action despite fear, you will begin to gain evidence that you are capable of so much more than your limiting beliefs and fears would have you believe when you adopt the right mindset.
5. Keep Track of and Celebrate Your Wins
It has been proven that acknowledging and celebrating your wins is an important part of building confidence. In general, we respond better to reward than punishment. Keep track of your progress and celebrate all your sales wins along the way. You don’t have to wait until you reach a huge milestone or goal.
You can reward yourself for all your success, no matter how big or small.
Build Sales Confidence and Improve Your Sales Skills
Sales confidence takes time to build and definitely doesn’t happen overnight. However, if you follow these steps and take consistent action, you will soon be mastering your sales with ease.
